Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit & Business Leadership Awards 2012 ( www.asianpharmaleaders.com ) is all set to buzz in Mumbai on 21st Sept on a title track Brand India, organized by Asia’s most analytical Healthcare bi-monthly magazine Pharmaleaders ( www.pharmaleaders.co.in ) in association with the Ministry of Commerce & industries, Government of India , Pharmexcil (Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council Of India, Set up by Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Govt of India) & several other pressure groups & trade organizations. The Annual Affair will bring some of the finest brains of the world in a single platform says Satya Brahma, Editor-In-Chief of Pharmaleaders Magazine, “Pharmaleaders’s Focus is to sensitize & pressurize the Government on key reforms that has been pending for years, advise the healthcare providers to provide quality medicines at affordable rates & bring uncomfortable topics that are generally not debated in any top platforms”. This is the platform that will give rise to some of the biggest issues the industry is confronting.
The Coveted Title for this year’s selection India’s Most Admired Surgeon 2012 was unanimous both by the Indian surgical community as well as the Jury Members consisting of 5 member body having cross section representation from the Indian Government, Indian Healthcare Sector, Consultants & journalists. And it is Harvard University trained, internationally acclaimed Cardiac Surgeon and Healthcare Economist Dr Mukesh Hariawala. This choice would hardly be a surprise to the healthcare professionals who have followed his 25 year 3 continent glittering career journey. The recognition is truly global & is spectacular considering the high importance of this category. The previous recipient of this Award was veteran Dr. Ramakanta Panda who is one of India's leading cardiac surgeons, and the Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the Asian Heart Institute. Dr Panda is a globally-reputed cardiac surgeon with impeccable credentials, who operated on Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister of India. This successful 'redo bypass', the second for Dr. Singh, further cemented Dr. Panda's reputation as one of India's leading cardiac surgeons.
Announcing the name of Dr Mukesh Hariawala as the proud recipient of such an honour , Satya Brahma, Chairman of the 5th Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit & Business Leadership Awards 2012 who also spoke to the Boston based Doctor in US  said “  Dr Mukesh symbolizes innovations in best practices & is very down –to-earth, someone who has spent nearly two & half decades in healthcare practice & has catapulted to the limelight after he operated the first Surgery to the present Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh. The great co-incidence is that while the previcious recipient Dr Panda was the latest one to operate, the first operation was done by Dr Mukesh Hariawala”. “Dr Mukesh Hariawala  is reputed to be one of the safest heart surgeons in the world, with a 99.5% success rate in bypass surgery” added Satya in a News Release. Dr Mukesh Hariawala is scheduled to fly from US to India to deliver his Keynote Address on Are We Ready For A " Mechanical Artificial Heart " For Indian Patients. An overview & will also receive the Award on 21st Friday, September in a suburban Mumbai Hotel, India.

It may be noted here that Dr Hariawala has done pioneering research work in the field of Cardiac Angiogenesis which is the spontaneous development of new blood vessels in the heart by laser stimulation and subsequent injection of patients own Stem Cells harvested from bone marrow. This unique “Triple Heart Therapy  " would be the future treatment of heart disease which is expected to save millions of lives worldwide. The low cost procedure would be a major expense containment particularly for the under privileged indian patients with diabetes who cannot afford expensive operations. It is a natural bypass to bypass surgery, explains Dr Hariawala. "I want to see a vibrant and aggressive government policy where India's monetary resources are better utilized towards rural development and raising the standards of living for all Indians, asserted Boston based Dr Hariawala who also recently became one of the first cardiac surgeons in the world to qualify with an Executive Healthcare MBA added Dr Hariawala.

The award is to be presented to him in a power packed veterans of the Healthcare Industry by His Excellency Maharashtra Governor Shri K. Sankaranarayanan in the presence of who’s & who’s of Healthcare Exprts in India with several representation from overseas countries and several invited dignitaries from a cross section of all industries.Dr Hariawala who is the only NRI surgeon to hold a special Honorary Visiting Cardiac Surgeon appointment at Mumbai's Jaslok Hospital . He will also deliver the " Keynote Lecture " on cutting edge technology " Mechanical Artificial Heart " which he plans to bring to India next year. This Titanium Heart is an alternative to Transplantation which is Lithium ion battery powered. This will bring a big relief to heart patients who are normally bedridden who have no options and do not qualify medically as candidates for procedures like Angioplasty , Stents or Bypass Surgery." Dr Hariawala is expected to wrap up his keynote with critical analysis of the 100 Billion Dollar Medical Tourism opportunity as projected by accounting giants Deloitte and Company. US president Barack Obama's Healthcare Reform Bill details will be presented and its impact on India's strategic planning into this opportunity. " Socialization of US Healthcare System is India's next biggest opportunity after the Software industry boom " says an optimistic Dr Hariawala.

Dr Hariawala’s  celebrity patients include Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh , Music maestro R D Burman , BCCi Chairman Raj Singh Dungarpur , Industrialist Ramkrishna Bajaj , Goenka and many more. He has also delivered keynote lectures as Chairman of Cardiac Surgery at the recently concluded World Congress of Cardiology in Dubai and is booked to speak in Beijing, China at the Olympic Arena to commemorate the annual Great Wall Cardiology conference in October ' 2012.
The medical world often finds itself clueless when it comes to providing treatment to the patients with terminal heart disease who are not candidates for routine angioplasty, stent or bypass surgery. Such patients can benefit only by transplantation which is not a practical solution due to severe shortage of donor hearts. However, here is good news for these patients in India: Titanium VAD (Ventricular Assist Devices), which functions as an "Artificial Heart," can give them a new life, says acclaimed cardiac surgeon Dr. Mukesh Hariawala.

Monday, 23rd July 2012, Mumbai, Maharashtra: Pharmaleaders is all set to bring together some of the biggest names in healthcare, pharmaceutical circle, policy makers to create a platform of interaction of a very intense debate on Brand India : Beyond Generics, Growth, Challenges & Developments in Mumbai on Friday, the 21st September 2012 at Hotel Hilton Mumbai International Airport. The timing of such a Summit is viewed as very crucial at a time, the Government of India announcing the landmark historical decision to make medicines available to the needy in the form of Generics. 5th Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit 2012 in India Pushes Brand India Image

5th Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit 2012 in India Pushes Brand India Image
Industry Leaders to Debate on Indian Pharma Industry’s Growth Story & Generic Drive with Complex Issues at Pharmaleaders Annual Summit & Awards 2012
Maharashtra, Mumbai, India, Tuesday, 10th July 2012. The much awaited leadership event of Pharmaleaders’s Annual meet, 5th Annual Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit & Business Leadership Awards 2012 has an aptly theme “Brand India”, Beyond Generics - Growth, Challenges & Opportunities to be staged in India’s leading capital of Pharmaceutical Companies, Mumbai. Widely perceived by Industry’s Opinion Leaders & Analysts as the Centre-Point of debating complex & serious issues, the platform will showcase more than 20 Industry Leaders deliberating on crucial topics of great significance. More than 200 CEO’s, Owners of Pharmaceutical Companies, Pharma Academia, Policy Makers, Management Firms, Diplomats along with overseas Companies have blocked their date to attend at the commercial capital of India in Mumbai on Friday, 21st September at Hotel Hilton Mumbai International Airport, India. Speaking on the Theme Brand India, Satya Brahma, Chairman & Editor-In-Chief of Pharma Leaders magazine said, “While the earlier Summits since last four years debated equally significant Issues , This year’s Debate will assume significance in view of Indian Government’s announcement to provide free medicines & push for Generics, a decision that may reshuffle the business models of both domestic & MNC”s as Branded Medicines will take a beating”.
Considering the life cycle of block-buster molecules having an average of 20 odd years & In an age where billions of dollars are being spent on research for new molecules and drugs, the best Brands are the old Brands that has topped the list. While top 10 Brands in India come from the mix of Domestic Pharma majors & MNC’s, the big debate of Generics, to my mind will not go well with the medical profession as Doctors will not be aware the manufacturers details as many will plunge into it. While, domestic players dominate the rankings with a 65% share by owning 196 brands in the top-300 list. However, despite a limited presence in India (20% of the total domestic sales), MNCs have demonstrated better brand building capabilities and have created 92 of the top-300 brands, and five of top 10 brands sold in the country added Satya.
Some of the Key Issues that will be deliberated at the daylong Summit by the Industry veterans are
Ø Brand India : Challenges & Opportunities in an era of Global Economy Slowdown
Ø Branded Formulations VS Branded Generics, 2012 Pharmaceutical Diversification Trends
Ø Obama Healthcare Reforms & its Effect in India . Key Challenges.
Ø The Rise of Indian Healthcare Market: Top 10 sales markets by 2020. Key Challenges.
Ø Emerging Pharmaceutical Market in India , Strategic Partnerships Between Domestic and MNC's are the Driving Force.
Ø Is India's Ambitious $5bn Push Deals Blow To Global Firms With Focus On Generic Alternatives Above Branded Drugs
Ø India's Emerging Biotechnology Industry, Partnering And Investment Opportunities.
Ø Neutraceutical & OTC Sector : The European Market Challenge
Ø Globalization of Indian Pharma Brands: Key Challenges & Opportunities.
Ø Are we ready for a “Mechanical Artificial Heart “for Indian Patients?
It is pertinent here to note that India has the highest number of US-FDA approved plants outside the US. Most of these plants have multiple approvals from regulatory authorities in Canada, Australia and Germany. India also holds a strong position in producing generic drugs through reverse engineering.
India has put in place a $5.4 billion policy to provide free medicine to its people, a decision that could change the lives of hundreds of millions, but a ban on branded drugs could backfire. However despite 40 percent of the people living below the poverty line, or $1.25 a day or less. The Govrernment of India’s Policy is laudable only to the extent of concept, the real test will be in implementation. The patent expiry of several major 'blockbuster' drugs, coupled with other factors, will fuel growth of global generic pharmaceuticals market by 2017, a scenario that could be a game changer. The global generic pharmaceuticals market is likely to witness strong growth in the next few years owing to the patent expiration of key blockbuster drugs, and the judicious cost containment efforts of governments and healthcare service providers worldwide.
